Landscape

How do you experience Landscape? We can all be awed by breathtaking views of mountains, or sunlight breaking through a stormy sky to light up a distant hillside. These kinds of places are a big inspiration to me. They inform my painting either obviously or in subtle ways. But this isn’t the only kind of landscape.

Landscape begins when you step outside your front door. When you pull the door closed behind you, do you step straight into A to B mode, marching forwards to get to your destination in the quickest time possible? Or do you take a deep breath, look at the sky, feel the air on your skin and step out into the landscape to be part of it, to feel it?

When you walk with all your senses alert, in the way of wonder, nature and mystery, it transforms the world around you and within you. Try it next time you are on your way to work, or going shopping. Open your front door and step out into the landscape. Did you notice that self seeded Foxglove on the bare bit of land opposite the bus stop? Or the tiny mosses growing between the cracked paving? Look at the incredible textures on that tree bark. What was the sky like today? Was it a brilliant clear blue, or were their great billowing white clouds looking majestic and heavenly?

When you begin to see this ordinary beauty, you have started to observe the way of an artist. As you notice the little miracles of your local landscape, you are training your senses to receive so much more when you are lucky enough to experience the big landscapes of your life. The most inspiring for me is the landscape of Ireland. The mix of mountains and sea, ancient peat land and rocky shores, it is full of richness and diversity and it stirs my soul.
